Zinc Plating Barnstaple

Doug Taylor Metal Finishing Co are a family-run business, established in 1981 and providing comprehensive Zinc Plating Barnstaple.

The business was started by Doug Taylor himself, a keen chemist with a passion for Zinc Plating, and there are now three generations of the Taylor family involved in the business.

All Zinc Plating work for our Barnstaple customers is carried out to British Standards, and we incorporate additional inspection points at each element of the zinc plating process to ensure that the end result provides the best possible finish that the metal part will allow.

Everything is checked whilst wrapped to ensure the item is of the highest quality before being sent out or collected. We will handle everything from single items to larger volumes, subject to required turnaround times.

Zinc plating for Barnstaple customers

Barnstaple is about 80 miles from our workshop near Weston-super-Mare. You can send items by insured courier, or call 01934 820 454 to arrange a time to drop them in, Monday to Friday between 8.30am and 5pm.

Gate hinges, latches, bolts and garden hardware can be zinc plated, and it will protect them for a good while. For anything that lives outdoors all year and takes the full weather, though, galvanising lasts longer than plating. We will tell you honestly which suits your parts before you send them.

Our main zinc plating page explains the process and the finishes we offer.

Our zinc plating process

We provide the highest quality zinc plating services to meet the varied demands of both trade and private customers. As well as the standard zinc plated finish, we offer these specialist finishes:

  • Tripass ELV Tech Blue (Zinc and Clear passivate) - provides a silver-like finish
  • Zincovate Yellow (zinc and yellow passivate) - provides a gold/pink like finish
  • Black (Black Passivate) - provides a black finish

The transformation process (strip - clean - acid - zinc) is to British Standards, so is included within our pricing. This process naturally takes longer to undertake but ensures a good finish at every stage of the zinc plating process. It also allows us to undertake zinc plating for sizes from household items right down to intricate items such as nuts and bolts, eliminating the chances of any single item being lost. Our tank sizes depend on the finish. For clear (bright) zinc we can handle single items up to 8ft 3in (251cm) long, 2ft 6in (76cm) wide and 1ft 4in (41cm) deep. For yellow zinc the maximum is 2ft 6in (76cm) long, 2ft (61cm) wide and 3ft (91cm) deep, and for black zinc 2ft 6in (76cm) long, 2ft 3in (69cm) wide and 2ft 3in (69cm) deep.

We are proud to retain to this day a traditional zinc plating process where every item is hand-wired. Our manual process also achieves a thicker finish, ultimately improving the end quality and depth of the zinc finish.

Please note you will need to specify if you require Polishing prior to a zinc coating being applied, as this is not usual practice as stated on the above transformation process.

Components we can Zinc Plate

This process is most often used for items that are unseen, such as under car parts.  The list is endless as to what we have zinc plated in the past ranging from larger items – Engine and Brake parts to the smaller items like Nuts and Bolts that the owners wanted to give a protective finish to.

We can do everything – If you are unsure whether you can plate your item, just give us a call and we can provide the answers.

Is any Preparation Work needed by the Customer?

No, generally you can supply your item to us in its current condition and we will undertake all preparations (strip and polish) before undergoing the transformation process.  The only exception would be if we have to manually remove heavy paint layers or lacquers from the metal you send to us, in which case a small extra charge would apply to the stripping process. All details of this will be included in the quotation we provide to you before commencing work.

Accreditations / Industry Standards and Awards

All of our Zinc Plating processes adhere to the appropriate British Standards. We are members of the Federation of Small Businesses and approved contractors to Leonardo Helicopters (formerly Agusta Westland)

We provide a twelve-month guarantee on all zinc plating work, except die cast and aluminium components.
